How do grants work?

I got a 24k grant from UNC for the upcoming school year.
Is there some kind of guarantee that I will get close to that same amount every year?

I'm not understanding how grants work at all....and if I don't get that amount every year, there's no way I can afford the OOS tuition to go there for four years.

It is probable that you will get that amount if everything stays the same but verify with the school. you (or Parent) should calll a FA officer and ask them how the aid will continue in years 2-4. As a side note, that is a great grant amount!

Grants come in a variety of flavors. What they have in common is that they are free money.

Grants coming as merit aid generally continue for all 4 years provided GPA and other requirements are met.

Grants coming as need-based aid require annual application for financial aid and are subject to change based upon changes in EFC, cost of attendance, and fin aid policy.

Make sure you understand the conditions of your grant.
