How do I become a Michigan resident for tuition/acceptance purposes?

My situation is I am from Illinois, dependent student, and my parents own a place in Michigan where I am currently staying and attending CC. I am looking to transfer to Michigan in Fall 2011. My mother has a flexible job and can change her resident status to Michigan, my Father cannot. Michigan's site for residency say both parents must submit tax returns, unless they are divorced, in that case one can be submitted.

Is there any way to get around this? UIUC is a good school that I can get into and remain a Illinois resident, but Michigan is preferable, and the difference in tuition between in state and out of state is a lot for UMich, also preference seems to be given to in state transfers.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to obtain residency. Michigan is not flexible when it comes to this.

I agree with res ipsa. I lived and worked on a legal green card in Michigan for 7 years with my son attending school here since middle school and he was STILL classified as an International because he saw his (Canadian) dad twice a year. We eventually won an appeal by proving that I was his principal custodian, etc. etc. etc. (which I was) but I can assure you having your mom move her biz to Michigan with only a year to go just won’t work. They’ll say that you did it to bypass OOS, which of course, would be true. Sorry, I know it’s harsh, but we’re saving you time and trouble by telling you now.

You’re out of luck. Michigan won’t give you IS status.
