How do I fill out the 2016-2017 Fasfa when I only have 2014 tax returns?

Do I just use the 2014 tax returns’ info?

Ask your parents or get their 2015 Tax returns, it doesn’t take that long.

You should have end of year pay stubs that will give you a good estimate for 2015. You need to use the best estimates possible for the 2015 tax year. Only use 2014 numbers if there isn’t really much difference.

You will file using a “will file” status…meaning you will file your taxes but have not yet done so. Use the best possible estimates for the 2015 tax year. Next week, get your taxes completed. You should have all of the info to do so. Then go back into your FAFSA, and amend it to reflect the actual 2015 tax return numbers. Change your status to “taxes completed” and resubmit.

You will have to link to the IRS data retrieval tool, but you won’t be able to do that for 2-3 weeks after your taxes are filed.

The IRS started accepting 2015 returns on Jan 19th so not many people have their taxes done yet.

But follow thumper’s advice above and then encourage your parents to get their taxes done soon.
