I'm a junior in high school and I thought I'd start looking into scholarships, but I don't know where to begin. Can someone help me get started?

Hi,

This is the RIGHT time to start looking.

First of all, certain colleges are the best sources for scholarships - colleges give the biggest scholarships that are usually for multiple years.

So… :)

What is your GPA

What are your test scores - SAT and ACT (take both, if you haven’t).

If you havent’ taken either test yet, sign up for them (and pay the extra for the full score report!).

What was your PSAT score?

What is your home state?

What kinds of schools do you like? Big, small, quiet, rah rah big sports, city, rural, warm weather, cold/snowy weather?

What is your likely major or career?

Let us know, and then we’ll help you!

:)

My GPA is…

My 10-12 GPA right now is 3.45, 3.82 weighted. I don’t think this includes my junior year yet.

Sophomore year: 3.5 first semester, then 4.17 second semester. (Weighted)
Junior: 4.5 (Weighted) as of now but semester hasn’t ended yet so I’m guessing it’s not in the 10-12 GPA yet?

I just took the December SAT to see how it is and got 1760. Writing/Reading kills me, becauses English is my second language. I don’t think I paid for the full score report. Is it too late now? I plan on taking SAT again and ACT later in the year, maybe even Senior year too.

My PSAT score is 178.

I live in California.

I don’t care about the size of the school. Maybe not too big. I want to play soccer in college but I’m not that good so probably not a big sports college. I prefer cooler/colder weather, because I sweat more than average and hate hot weather.

I haven’t really looked too much into major/career, but I’m looking into Accounting.

Hi,

Are you an int’l? Or a citizen or green card resident?

If you’ve gone to Calif high schools for 3 years, then you qualify for in-state rates in CA public schools.

To get good merit scholarships, you’ll need to get your test scores up. Also take the ACT.

Sign up for the next tests, get the score reports, and work on weak areas.

Go to Collegeboard and see if it’s too late to order score report from Dec exam. It may not be too late.

Use your PSAT results online to look at the questions you missed. Use the code on the PSAT score report to get your test info. That will help you with your SAT.

Get some SAT and ACT practice books and practice! :)

Schools use grades 9-11 or 10-11 GPA’s for college consideration. UC’s only use grades 10-11 and only from certain classes - look that up for details.

How much can your parents contribute towards your education?

Do you want to go out of state?

Once you get better scores, come back and we’ll recommend some schools for you.

BTW…as for soccer…

Others will have to chime in here about that. I only know of schools with intramural men’s soccer (wait, are you male or female?).

Would playing intramural soccer be ok?

The best place to start looking is with your guidance counselor. They have local scholarships which are much easier to get than national ones. Another great resource is fastweb.com.

Best of luck and good for looking ahead!

Is the score report called “Student Answer Service?” I found that and I can still get it for $12.

I’m a male. Not sure about soccer yet.

I’d prefer staying in CA because outer states are probably more expensive.

I have a green card, I moved here 6-7 years ago.

Yes, that’s it. Order it. You’ll get a copy of your test, and an answer key which will also indicate which ones you got wrong.

For ACT, it’s called something different.

Since you have a green card, you’re eligible for Federal aid (if you qualify).

Find out what your EFC might be…

[FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid](http://www.finaid.org/calculators/finaidestimate.phtml)

If your income is low enough, you’ll get free tuition at UC schools.

however, you’re going to have to get your scores up to have the best chances for UC and Cal State admittance.

Some Out of state schools might end up being cheaper IF you get your scores up, and keep your GPA up. :)

Make sure you do well this junior year! That can make a difference!!! Get that GPA up as high as you can. You probably have mid-terms coming up. Study and do well on those. :)
