Agree with above. Squash is a lot different than other recruited sports. Most of the kids are looking for admissions boosts, not necessarily scholarship money. Take a school like Fordham for example. Varsity squash program, but roster is filled mostly with American kids. There are other non-Ivy squash programs that are filled almost entirely with internationals (St Lawrence for example). Not sure why, but my guess is that St Lawrence offers athletic scholarships, and Fordham doesn’t.
For the Ivy schools, there are no athletic scholarships, only need based. But there aren’t many high ranked US kids who need the aid. So hence the international domination.
Keep in mind, college squash is not an NCAA sport so NCAA head count/equivalency rules and limits don’t apply. Of course, Ivy League does not give athletic scholarships to anyone and most NESCACs do not give merit awards and no D3 schools give athletic scholarships. Trinity, one of the premier Men’s Squash programs in the country, does give some limited merit aid. St Lawrence does as well, as does Hobart William Smith. F&M is only financial aid, no merit aid. There are only about 35 Men’s programs in the country so not a lot of spots.
There are only 14 D1 schools, 13 mens programs, 12 womens. Eight Ivies, the US Naval academy (no scholarships) and then the other that can offer them but some do not - Stanford, UVA, Fordham, Drexel, G.W. I think most of the ‘help’ is going to be in admissions and that the schools sponsor the teams and the students don’t have to pay the costs of competing.
The rest are D3 schools (21 schools, 20 men’s/19 women’s teams).
If Fordham doesn’t offer scholarships, that leaves 4 schools that might offer scholarships.
See now there is this guy named singer…Only kidding. Usually recruiting sites follow the athlete and eventually the coaches start prowling the sites as well.
Trinity College in Hartford. 13 Straight National Titles in Squash besting ivy and all other. Trinity College squash holds the record for longest unbeaten streak in any intercollegiate sport in the nation’s history at 252 games. Squash at Trinity College was recently ranked by ESPN as one of the top 10 sports dynasties of all time.
Yes Trinity recruits internationally. Go on their website and fill out a recruiting questionnaire and contact the coach. I imagine with these accolades it is insanely competitive to get a roster spot.
Yes, Trinity’s championship streak was broken by Princeton in 2012. The Trinity coach, Paul Assaiante, and the Princeton coach, Bob Callahan, were good friends as well as rivals. Assaiante reputedly said that, when the streak was broken, he hoped it would be by his friend and rival at Princeton.
