How do I retain the history I learn?

Uggh! I must admit I hate history, mainly because it’s boring. I have trouble retaining learned information in my mind. I may understand it for some time then it will fade away…I think it’s because I just don’t “care” for it. Maybe that’s why I got a 3 on my AP World Exam.

This year I took APUSH. I understand most of the stuff and score well on unit tests but when it comes to cumulative tests, I do bad! I don’t even remember that much stuff from the first couple months of school.

I would love to score a 4 or 5 on the exam–how do you guys do it? How do you retain all this boring stuff?

I just try to remember general trends throughout certain time periods. It works better in AP World but in APUSH I try to know the general trends that are occurring at certain time periods and then know some info to support those trends.

I am also a history person so it is much easier for me to remember those kinds of things.

For me, I was in your position. I hated history especially APUSH because I thought it was boring and pointless to learn. The key is to force yourself to “like” it, it helps to connect key events together which helps in APUSH where almost everything focuses on the US.
