I’m am currently writing my college essay and do you guys have any tips?
Be as unique and true to yourself as you can. The colleges want to see what makes you you so, within reason of course, ignore what others are saying you should write about and write about what you truly want the college to know. You do want others advice but you need to write on your own topic in your own voice to make a truly unique essay. And yes, I am a senior writing essays and asking for my own advice here so take that in mind.
Agree with @ArdaMelamar . Ideally, you should feel a “click” with your essay when you’ve found the right topic. Pretty much everything has been written about before, so just write about whatever you feel represents you as genuinely as possible.
I’m in your position as well and I’m writing one of my supplements on clouds. Just go for it. No matter the topic, no matter how weird other people think it might be, run with it. These are YOUR essays! Own them.
In our lives we all have experiences that affect us in very meaningful ways. Choose one of your meaningful experiences and write about it as if you are telling someone what happened and why you were affected or how it changed you. Do not try to make what you are writing about profound or bigger than what it was. You don’t need to do that. It was important to you and that is what is important. Many years ago when my husband was applying to graduate business schools, he wrote an essay about a hike that he had taken years earlier with a group of close friends. I still remember how he described the sense of joy he felt with the people he hiked with on that day, the sun and the flowers on the mountainside. It seems small, but it represented him perfectly.
