My son is going to do CS major at UT. We have received financial aid package, UT is not giving any aid to him. Their estimated COA is around 27K per year.

How do you actually pay the college tuition/fees?
Does UT let you spread the payments out over 10 months?

My son is living and eating on campus - our experience this year is the total is closer to 21k to 22k for tuition, housing, food, and books.

You can pay tuition in installments or all at once. There are 3 installments - the first one is half of the tuition bill and includes a $15.00 installment fee. You can pay installments or entire tuition online, by mail, or in person at the main building. Online payments are either echeck, electronic funds transfer, or credit card (2.3% fee for credit card). Paying in person can be cash, personal check, cashiers check or money order - no credit cards in person.

Also, the 3 installments are per semester - tuition is charged per semester.

Thank you so much. You are so helpful. Really appreciate your quick responses.

$15 installment fee is onetime fee? I am planning to pay with credit card but 2.3% fee is too high. I think this fee should be for each transaction.

How to pay for housing? Do they allow installments?

You dont need to pay COA at one time and you can pay them by semester. For example, your sons room and board will be $8973 for both semesters, unless he stays in San Jacinto, Duran, a single room or a room with connected/private bath then the rate will be higher (see below). The 2012-2013 tuition rate for CS was $4848 per semester. As UT mother posted, there is a tuition installment plan for each semester. When the school starts, if you choose the installment plan you just need to pay the half of the semester tuition $2424 and $15 (installment fee) plus half of the housing and food $ 4486, total $6925. You will then pay remaining tuition ($2424) at the next two payments in the fall. In the spring semester, you will do the same. For textbooks, there are many options to buy at discounted prices. For the entire year, your COA will not be anywhere near 27K.

We fully fund our sons education ourselves. That is what it is and we know the money is well spent for the quality of education he receives at UT.

@Sunnydayfun: Thanks so much for all that information! I was really worried about the COA… I was like… 27k for attending? How did it get so high? Of course it’s gone up since my brother’s gone to college (8 years ago), but I didn’t expect it to be so high. However, you’ve really made me feel better that it won’t be costing the whole 27k!
