How do you balance this?

Here are few suggestions:

Roanoke College (Salem, Va.) There is a pretty useful aid calculator on the site. They’ve got merit, not just need-based. Also, having a Phi Beta Kappa chapter would seem to indicate strong academics.

Juniata College (Huntingdon, Pa.) There’s a clear-cut merit aid estimator on the site.

McDaniel College (Westminster, Md.) This is near where I live. It’s popular school with the locals because its aid program makes a private school more afforadable.

Loyola U of Md (Baltimore) Larger than the others listed. Your D would likely be eligible for aid, assuming she raises her scores a little.

Washington College (Chestertown, MD) Automatic $12,500+ discount for NHS members. Other merit aid, too. http://fa.washcoll.edu/scholarships.php

vandygrad87:

You mentioned that you will not qualify for need aid. Even after merit based aid, many if not most of these privates are still going to come in at about $30,000, some even more.

Don’t neglect the many public offerings mentioned.

Case Western Reserve (private) is awesome with Merit packages. My D’s balance was about $5k/year out of $33k 4 years ago. She went to state public though on full tuition Merit Award. Looking back, she said that her state public was perfect place for her with many more opportunities that she has ever imagined for herself in UG. However, if you specifically are looking for private, Case is known for great Merit packages, although, all schools got more stringent and tuitions went up since D. has applied to UG.

Thank you for all your responses! We will definitely be taking them into account. We visited the University of Mary Washington today and I was surprised at how large and beautiful it was. Very nice! :-)

Thanks again for your help.

Be sure to plug in the numbers in the new net price calculators that colleges will be required to have on their web sites beginning Oct 29. Many LACs already have them up and running, and it’s amazing how many come in at a lower price than the “sticker” value.

Similar situation here, except S2 is now a sophomore at a CTCL. He was accepted with very good merit aid at Wooster, Drew, Clark; attends Clark. Muhlenberg just seemed too far from home, but several similar and higher stats kids from our area did very well there. Wooster, Drew, Clark all offered excelllent merit aid. None could be considered a reach. We knew going into the process that he was unlikely to receive needed merit aid from a reach school.

After S1’s experience at a small LAC, where he was not very challenged, I have been concerned about intellectual challenge for S2. S2 and I have discussed academic rigor at Clark. He assures me that there are some very bright students, whom he perceives as brighter than he. Worcester, MA is not everyone’s cup of tea, but S2 loves it.

Good luck with the adventure!

Is location a concern? I can think of several schools that offer merit $ that might appeal to her; however, they’re nowhere near MD. Our D is 20 hours away by car, and I must confess, we really underestimated costs associated with having her so far away. If your D is wanting something fairly small, though, and is okay with going away, she might look at Trinity University, SMU, TCU, Pepperdine, U of Richmond (closer to you), VCU (closer to you), Chapman, and UTD. Have you looked through this thread?

what does she plan to major in? if sciences or health related a great school with automatic merit is UAB Welcome. COA for oos is 20-24K and… with merit, can be as low as 10-14K (ie blazer elite scholarship is 10K per year awarded for a 3.0 gpa and act 28 and above) also has full rides for national merit, aceivement and hispanic scholars

tier 1 research…11K undergrads,
urban campus
biological sciences ranked 34th
receives more research funding than all other alabama schools combined
incredible honors program sci/tech
ranked 5th for diversity and 11th for happiest students
airport
its med school ranks higher in some areas than harvard.

pm if you would like more info…son goes there.

If you are going to be in Allentown to look at Muhlenberg, head up to Wilkes Barre and Scranton to check out Kings College and Marywood University. Also Moravian in Bethlehem. They are all very generous with merit aid.

If you like beautiful campuses, Moravian is hard to beat. One of the reasons I take a lot of continuing ed. classes there.
