“Seriously, I’m so excited for the possibilities in front of my D that it’s not a downer for me at all.” This is how I felt. I did (still do, she’s gone again for the summer) have some days where I missed DD and I think of her a lot.

Did you see the new Toy Story movie? Fun to watch with your recent graduate–going off to college like Andy.

Families are different. We are a family of 2, my D and I, and are exceptionally close. We enjoy each other’s company tremendously, share many of the same interests and activities, and have never had typical parent/child problems. I think its just very different when you have a single parent and an only child AND when your temperaments are so well suited to each other.

I laugh when I see posts advising kids to be sure to call or email once a week…heck, we call or email each other multiple times a day, and we both expect that to continue when she goes to college.

We were talking recently about how we plan to stay very close at the same time that she “spreads her wings,” and she said, “Don’t worry, Mom, I intend to spread my wings, but you’re one of my favorite people to fly with.”

Don’t get me wrong…we are a very unusual mother and daughter, and we know that. But we’re also unusually happy and close, and have no intention of changing that when she goes to college…just enhancing it.

Actually, after we dropped out D off for college, we did head out to Joshua Tree National Park for a camping trip!
