how do you demonstrate the 'match'?

hello;

I'm applying this fall for MIT '14, and I'm absolutely positive I'd love it at MIT. Everything about the culture, the hacks, the collaboration, etc. is just perfect for me and I think I embody a lot of the collaboration/spirit of fun/willingness to help etc that is needed for the environment. I just really want that to show in my application/interview/essays ... any advice on how to go about it?

The way to demonstrate anything is to produce some form of evidence to support your claims. The application process allows you to demonstrate evidence through:
-telling/explaining/conversing (interview)
-doing/showing (research paper/mathematical proofs/engineering project/art/music/other portfolio submitted)
-writing (essays)
-recommendations (support from other adults)
etc.
-standardized tests, GPA

You already seem pretty clear about your match with MIT. Just sit down and start thinking about all the different kinds of evidence that will demonstrate it clearly to the interviewer and admissions committee.

Also, you might want to read some MIT blogs to get a better idea of match. I thought I knew it, until I came to CPW and met all other prefrosh.

One way to show the match is to make sure other people talk about the things that would make you a great match. You don’t need to leave this to chance. Make several copies of “The Match Between You and MIT” from the admissions website. Give it to your recommenders along with other info about you when you ask for recommendations. Maybe even bring other MIT info with you, too, and show them why you love MIT, and why it would be great for you to go there. Good luck!

By the way, I saw from your other posts that UMich is your safety. That’s a great school. Their honors math sequence 295-296, etc. is awesome. Check it out. The word is that they invest a lot of time and treasure in their top math students. Of course, everything else under the sun is available at UMich, too.

that is such a good idea, geomom! (about talking to recommenders and making copies of that page) i really appreciate it.

and i love UMich :smiley: i’m planning on taking calc 3 there next year, and probably diff eq (i believe that’s 315-316?) i hear honors is proof-based though, so i’m not sure i’d like that.
