It seems to me that on-campus jobs are more likely to work with students in that area. So, I'll definitely try there first, but I need a job this semester in order to pay for next semester.

I've been looking at Monster, Career Builder, and Indeed.com, but most of the jobs don't list specific hours or don't fit. I'm not really suited to Bartending (which I've heard is a good college job). I'm not the "life of the party" sort. I'm more the "sit quietly in the corner" sort.

If I do find a job with flexible hours, when and how would I go about asking the employer about fitting the job around my classes?

See if your college has a job list. Also, just be frank to potential employers that you’re a college student and that work needs to be scheduled around your courses.

A lot of employers are willing to work around your schedule, but you just need to make sure to communicate with them. I work for a hospital as a dietary aide and my manager has been amazing in scheduling. During my first semester I will work 6A-7P on Sunday and 3:30P-7P Tuesday and Thursday. (I can take on more if I want to do so.)

Granted, I only make a few cents above minimum wage, but I have a lot of benefits. I have the option to buy insurance at a good price, but I get a lot of free food (I’m never hungry at work), discounted cafeteria food, discounts on medical care, and etc. Not to mention the excellent work experience and valuable networking.

This will sound really really weird, but look into hospital jobs. They are always short of workers, they are usually open 24/7, and they are really flexible. Go onto their specific website and look under careers. You don’t need to be a licensed medical professional; they have jobs in food service, hospitality, administrative, and medical (like unit secretaries and different techs).

Oh and… Like with my manager, I just set down with her and told her my schedule and the hours I am willing to work. She was very eager to work with me. Because I work in the medical field, we have to fill every shift, so my manager was willing to give me every last shift possible.

I will make a side note: I have high ranking seniority, so my boss gives me first dibs on any hours and vacation days that I want. You, being a new employee, will need to work on your schedule and be as flexible as you can.

Have you ever played a sport? My sons were soccer players, and they have referreed for soccer leagues/tournaments in areas near their schools. Pay ranges from $25-$60/games, depending on the level of the game and your ref license. My son also ran games for the IM department at his school, although it paid less.

A lot of job openings won’t be advertised on those websites, especially not the kind of unskilled job you are looking for. Keep an eye out for “help wanted” or “hiring” signs in the neighborhood of your college.

No, I have not. I’ve lived a very isolated life thus far.

I know not everything’s listed. However, I can look for jobs on Monster from here. I won’t be able to look for “help wanted” signs until I’m actually nearby.
