How do you go about recording yourself?

So, I've been playing violin for an obscenely long time, but I never really got anywhere with it. However, I do want credit on my application for the countless hours that I spent (fruitlessly) laboring away. I have no intention whatsoever of majoring in music, but I would like to be able to continue playing and possibly get lessons from whatever school I happen to go to.

I've got a few questions-I'd ask my teacher, but I don't see her until September, and I believe that this kind of stuff needs significant prep time.

Should I record myself?
If so, how should I do it? (Accompanied? Solo? On an mp3 CD or a simple tape? How many pieces should I prepare? What variety...etc.)

Thanks in advance.
(Now that I've thanked you, you MUST respond.)

spend $20 and get a decent computer mike, dowload the demo (20 day trial) for virtual DJ, record as much as you want, as many pieces as you want. then burn them onto a cd. easy as pie :D
prob. a solo would be good since its about YOU

pick a piece that shows your skills and style...pick the hardest piece you can play WELL and make it sound good. practice practice practice!! and play for your teacher in september...if you practice the piece (one should be enough) enough, then waiting till september to get it refined with her and then recording shouldn't be too much of a hassle in a busy time
