How do you pay rent while in college?

[QUOTE=""]
am trying to decide between UF, FSU, and Emory. I plan on going to law school after my 4 year. Am I more likely to get a better gpa at uf or fsu than Emory? or does it not really work that way?

How much are your parents paying?

For you to live off-campus in Atlanta, it will be costly.

You want to go to law school? Then don’t be borrowing for undergrad.

Yikes! How will younafford to live off campus in Atlanta? Sorry… it it’s a costly area…very costly. Even when sharing a place…it’s costly.

@mom2collegekids My parents are not really paying anything for me unfortunately.

And yes I do plan on going to law school, I just dont know how I will be able to do this without borrowing. I think Emory Will be cheapest for me but still is going to be pricey

@thumper1 That is unfortunately what I have found thus far. And that is why I am so concerned. It is so expensive and I dont know what I should do.

I’m guessing you need $12,000 minimum for living expenses in Atlanta for,the year. Minimum.

Where is that going to come from??

Are you saying that the FL colleges were going to be more costly?

@thumper1 I just am not getting much fin aid at the Florida colleges. So it would probably be cheaper to live in FL, but I will have to pay tuition. While at emory Tuition is paid but ga is expensive.

That is my dilemma. I also really want to go to emory, it is my dream school. So all this is really hard for me. I wish my parents would help me atall but I am on my own. Everything is just soo stressful

Looks like they say it’s $8K for on campus housing and an $5,800 estimate for food. Have you inquired about jobs on campus? Also you can make $$ over the summer.

You should be able to get student loan to help with that 7500 I think

Does your FA package from Emory already include $7500 in student loans

Yes I do have the option to take that much in loans @mom2collegekids

Are the 7500 in loans going towards tuition?

Can you give us the breakdown of your aid pkg

Also you may need to tell Emory that you’re going to live on campus and see if you get more aid that way.

@mom2collegekids I actually have not gotten the full breakdown letter. All the info I have is what I managed to get from the person over the phone. They say my letter should be available today, however so far it has not been. I guess I will have to call them tomorrrow about it.

Have you looked on your portal???

@mom2collegekids It hasnt been published there yet. I know that sounds weird. I have been actively emailing fin aid about it. Im sure it will be up by tomorrow

I have lived in the dorm without a food plan. Is this possible where you are going? I found I did not want to eat at the time the cafeteria was open or didn’t like the menu. I would not buy snack foods to eat in the dorm, but did love fresh fruit, salads and sandwiches. By not having a food plaiN could eat when where and with whom I wanted. To really save money on this on the street plan, could will need to carefully budget your money. Also an electric hotpot prepares, Rankin, as soup, instant oatmeal and tea or coffee, etc.

@moosingmodestly are you going in as a junior transfer? Congratulations on getting into Emory University!

It’s almost $14,000 a year for dorm and a food plan? Your tuition award might already include the $7500 loan that’s why @mom2collegekids asked. Your work study of $1000 will come in drips and drabs as you earn it, so it’s not there at the beginning of the year for paying bills. As a junior you can probably get a job paying better than the Federal minimum wage which is what Work Study pays. Your school might require that you buy some sort of meal plan if you live on campus, but living without one would be cheaper if you can live on ramen and pasta.

If you live off campus, check Facebook for groups named something like “Emory roommates” or “for rent in Atlanta”. Also check Apartments.com and Craigslist. You might think about just renting a room in someone’s house until you know your way around. Good luck.
