lets just say i'm native america, i am one of the best football players in the country, i am going to be the first person in my family to go into college and i am interested in harvard. how would i place on or all of these hooks into my application? would it be in the personal statement, supplement, or is it in my basic demogrphic sheet? thank you, any help would be much appreciated

Applications ask your ethnicity and if you’re a first generation student as part of the demographics section.

As for football, you can mention any awards/honors/rankings you have received because of your performance. If you are hoping to be recruited, well, that’s a whole different process-- otherwise your football talent is just another extra-curricular activity.

But… you state in two other threads that you are Ethiopian - how did you suddenly morph into a Native American? You also state that you are a freshman in high school, so are you saying that as a high school freshman you are one of the best football players in the country (there is no mention of football in any of your other posts).

My answer to your title question is that you don’t “put” a hook into your application if you don’t have one.

i said lets just say. read above post please

Let’s just say that on an internet forum where members are anonymous and trolling occurs, it’s generally best to be straightforward and ask questions directly rather than through thinly veiled hypothetical scenarios. Posting histories are open for all members to see, so directness and consistency add greatly to being considered a credible participant.

If you ARE the next Jim Thorpe then colleges will know you and you won’t have to say anything. Think about it.

You may find it helpful to go to the Common Application website and look at how the application is structured. Since you are still a freshman, you may also find it useful to go to Harvard’s website and read their advice about high school preparation.

thanks all

It is easier said than done to go to the Common App website and look at the app. You generally need to create an account to do that. Also… the Common App is changing (I believe significantly) this next round of applications. Hooks like ethnicity and first generation are likely to continue to be asked in the Common App questions, and ECs will obviously still be a section on the application. And as someone else said, if you are good enough at a sport for it to be a hook, you should be talking to the coaches early (junior year) anyway. Other places to place information:

In your Common App essay

Recently the Common App has had a “short essay” about an extra curricular activity, it might fit in there depending on what it is.

There has been an “additional information” section on the Common App where you could upload additional info that might be a possibility IF they retain that with the new version

You can ask your high school guidance counselor to include information in the recommendation form they fill out.
