How do you pronounce Beloit? Is it pronounced as if it were a French word, like “Bell-wah”? Does it rhyme with “Detroit”? Or is it pronounced differently?

It’s pronounced like Detroit.

Thank you very much. I’ve been on a streak of mispronouncing college names lately, so I wanted to find out if I was pronouncing Beloit correctly. (I wasn’t, by the way. I was pronouncing it "Bel-wah)

I probably have the story somewhat wrong but I remember reading something along the lines of Beloit having it’s name changed to rhyme with Detroit in the late 1800s. Some up and coming industrialist wanted to bring that vibe to Beloit. Previously it was a French name, Belle - something - that meant ‘beautiful earth’ - I guess the exact name has been lost, though the Indians had considered it a sacred area also and the campus is built around Indian mounds.

Kaiser, you aren’t alone. The common mispronunication is an in-joke at Beloit. Chapin Hall has Bel-Wah written on its roof, and there’s a cafe by the same name in town.
