How does Alabama's Honors College actually work?

I’m a bit unclear on the actual nature of the Honors College at Bama. It’s listed as a separate college on the main university website, but the Honors website says they do not offer specific majors. It says “ Honors students simply engage in an Honors version of a normal undergraduate plan of study.” Does this mean a student takes some courses through the Honors college and some through one of the other schools? And if so, can a student in the Honors college still receive scholarships through the other schools, e.g. the Engineering scholarship? Any info helps, thanks.

As an HC student, you belong to whatever college is your major (since, as you point out, HC does not offer specific majors). To remain an honors student, you must maintain a certain GPA. To graduate with the honors designation, you must take a minimum number of honors-designated classes (and these are either honors-designated sections of classes in various majors and colleges, such as Honors English or Honors Chemistry or Honors Physics, etc.) or are courses only open to HC students, such as seminars and service-based learning initiatives. You can also ask a professor to designate a course as ‘honors’ by doing ‘honors-by-contract’. You will be given additional work or more in-depth work to satisfy a ‘regular’ course as ‘honors’.

A student in the HC can receive any scholarships he/she is entitled to, such as the COE scholarship. In fact, once you are a continuing student, don’t forget to apply for additional scholarships, a large number administered by the UA Alumni Assn. For a complete list, see here (look for PDF link): https://alumni.ua.edu/scholarships/ . The deadline is March 1 (see here: https://alumni.ua.edu/scholarships/scholarship-application-process/).

Thank you very much, I’m an entering freshman
