How does Financial Aid Work With Divorced Parents?

I’ve looked into a lot of merit aid schools today, thanks. I guess I always just assumed that I’d be able to get adequate financial aid if I get into one of these full-need schools because I’m lower-middle-class, but I guess it’s hard to know. I’ve never known whether to categorize myself with the less than $60,000 a year group that is basically guaranteed good aid at these schools, because my household does make significantly less than that, but the divorce makes it complicated. Substantial merit aid seems difficult to get at some places, but do you think it’s a better bet for me? In your opinion do I need at least a couple safeties where I can get merit aid, or is one enough?

I vote for two safety schools…these would be financially possible and be places that you like. If the other options don’t work out, it’s nice to have choices. UNLESS…there is a safety school you absolutely love…then one is fine.

As an FYI, colleges deal with students from divorced families all the time. Your situation may seem complicated to you…but it won’t be to each college which has a process for dealing with need based aid.

The BEST way to know how colleges will deal with your non-custodial parent income is to call the college!
