How does Fordham’s financial aid differ every year?

You are planning to move closer to either Fordham or St. John’s? If money is an issue, I am going to guess that rents near St. John’s are going to be less than rents near Fordham.

Are you positive your family will be able to afford to live near one of these two colleges?

I’m sure we can afford to live near St. John’s. As for Fordham, if we can’t, it’s close enough to where I live right now so commute isn’t an issue yet.

Don’t count on work study to pay your tuition .

You must first apply for a job, get the job work the hours and get paid. What happens if this does not align with your payment plan? You will only be able to work so many hours a week.

Even with the minimum wage of $15/hour you will make approx, $300 every 2 weeks. If you have federal work study, the federal govt has not caught up with the NYC minimum wage. The pot of money from the federal govt to fund FWS will not be growing even though the min wage has increased. The result will probably be less work study jobs and more competition for those jobs .

The area around St. Johns is very residential, mostly private houses in Fresh Meadows, Jamaica estates, briarwood and Kew Garden Hills. The hospital is also not far from the university. Definitely not low rent districts. Rents are considerably higher because you have so many young people from the college and he law school wanting to rent in the area.

If you plan on commuting, it is going to be a long haul on the bus and the train. The Q46, while it provides excellent service, is one of the most crowed buses on the line because if you are on that line, it is the only bus to the subway station. If you take the express bus into midtown to pick up mass transit a 7-day express bus metro card wil cost you $60/week.

Work study jobs aren’t guaranteed. At our school freshman who are lucky enough to get a job can work 8 hours/week, and those don’t start until at least a couple weeks into the semester. It’s good for spending money but wouldn’t make much of a dent in tuition.

Since your EFC is $0 I think you could pay the CUNY tuition with your TAP and part of your Pell then use the balance of your Pell to help cover transportation and books. Have you applied to any of the CUNY schools? Does your parents’ income fluctuate? I think a budget of $10k/year sounds like a lot for a family whose EFC is $0.

@sybbie719

Money is an issue for Fordham, not for St. John’s (I got majority of my tuition covered there just with scholarships). I didn’t know how reliable work study jobs were, now I know. I’ll take it into consideration for sure.

From what you’re saying, I think St. John’s looks much more realistic than Fordham for me. Especially since they’re not known for being generous with their aid.

@austinmshauri
Yeah, I know that CUNY is a much smarter choice financially. But my parents want me to go to either SUNY or private. I did apply though. And no, it doesn’t fluctuate. It’s mostly similar every year.

while your parents want you to do Suny or private you realistically have to go where your money will take you and your parents are first in line to pay.

St johns tuition and fees are $48k/year. You need to add on board oks transportation and music expenses. Is your money need based or merit?

If merit what us the gpa you we’d to keep the merit key? Is it phases in over tie or do you one itthe inure you don’t make the gpa?

If you lose it, can you appeal and get it back? Read the fine print.

It really does not sound like St Johns may be affordable either. Unless you are going into PharmD at St Johns, I would not go into deep debt for it.

I would not do business at St Johns over a business major at Baruch or engineering over City college.

Your iarenra are caught up in the private is better which is not necessarily true because there are CUNY and Suny schools where you are going to get a better education than you would at St. Johns

What is your intended major?

It’s merit based since i’ve Only heard back about scholarship which already covers 90% of my tuition. I believe i’ve To maintain a 3.0 GPA, but i’ll Have to double check once I get my financial aid package.

My intended major is psychology. None of the CUNYs (as far as I know) are well-known for my major. Like I said, i’ve Visited St. John’s and it’s a great school. And I wouldn’t have to take out loans for it since the scholarship alone ensures i’d Have to pay less than 10k (my parents’ budget).

Private is better for my major because it’s really hard to find a job with a psychology bachelor’s. Private colleges have a lot of connections which will help in such circumstances.

@ains123

Is there some reason why you are including member CC URLs in your posts? Please stop.

Do you intend to be a psychologist as a career? Or what? Do,you understand that there is NOTHING you can do in the field of psychology with a bachelors degree? You will at least need a masters.

The LAST school you attend…so the one for your masters…or PhD…will be the one that matters.

Frankly, you can major in psychology at almost any undergrad school.

I’m guessing OP is trying to tag people.

@ains123 just put an “@” then start typing the name.

There is probably not a college in the country that does not have a psych major.

If you plan to pursue something psychologically based, you will need graduate school. Actually hunter has a very good psychology/social science program.

Please don’t drinki the kool-aid. Unless you are playing for the red storm there are not going to be any connections for you coming out of St Johns and attending there is not going to give you a leg up in the NYC job market

With I would hardly consider SjU having any deep alumni connections (it is not Norte Dame or USC) Hunter, City, Queen, Brooklyn, and many of the SUNYs are actually stronger schools.
