How does Housing Work?

oh, and can blocks be co-ed?

Yes. My D's block had 3 girls, 5 boys. I can't remember exactly when they designate their blocks (end of February? beginning of March?), but housing day (when freshmen find out where they're going to be living) is towards the end of March.

Thanks, Admiral. That is the building I was thinking about.

The Union dorms consist of Pennypacker, Hurlbut, and Greenough Halls. They are on Prescott and Harvard Sts., a quiet area just east of the Faculty Club. The beautiful architecture and landcaping of nearby buildings gives the area a nice, elegant feel, as well as quick access to Lamont Library, where you will be spending alot of time.

The rooms are bright, clean and bathrooms seem very up to date.

Honestly, I think Harvard housing is fantastic. I mean, granted my friends and I have grumbled in more than one instance about our housing, but it is only relative to other dorms on campus, rather than other dorms on other campuses.

Each house has its pros or cons, and most people grow to love the house they're eventually placed into to.

I don't think this was brought up yet, but I think that you can "link" with another blocking group now, which guarantees that the two blocking groups won't be in the same house, but will be in houses in the same area. Thus, you're not limited to just grouping yourself with 7 other people.

Are you kidding me??

camper231: No, I'm fairly sure they won't.

Why on earth would you make that request, though?

add me to the shocked list here too...why?

Wow...that's pathetic.

Huh, it seems that I've missed a unique request of some sort. Ho hum.

Anyways, I have a few questions as well:
- Is it possible to "force" a certain freshman dorm? (eg: I'm a light sleeper so Canaday is out; I have a walking problem so no Union dorms for me? - just to be clear, these are hypotheticals)
- Is it possible to "request" a specific roommate with ridiculously detailed preferences? I only ask because I wish to room with a friend of mine, if possible. (eg: I want an Asian guy who swims and is obsessed with interior design and firearms)
- Is Aplet Court really wher Harvard houses their famous freshmen? I heard there was an FBI surveillance room in that building or something. Could very well be a rumor, of course.
- Related: anyone know of any celebrities or kin of celebrities in the class of 2012?

I doubt you could force a particular dorm without a documented medical reason. Union dorms are closer to some classes that some dorms in the yard. You might be able to get a roommate with specific requests. I asked for someone who spoke German and had experience living overseas and they did find me someone who had both. Never heard that there was a special place for famous freshmen.

For dr.d- If you state you're a very light sleeper, you may be placed in the quiet Union dorms, as they are away from the bells of Memorial Church (think hourly chimes) and the traffic of Mass. Ave. If you claim to have walking problems, you'll need to file offical medical forms from your doc.
--I suspect they will not fulfill a request for a well-profiled person if they suspect he is from the same school or area.
--Apley Court is randomly assigned. But if you say you would love being in the center of town rather than on the Yard perhaps this would tilt your app.
I think Weld is the freshman dorm with the police station in the basement, and I vaguely remember that is where security-issue students are housed (ex:an Arab royal family member a few years ago?)

I was under the impression that freshman are randomly sorted into the various Yards (Ivy, Elm, etc.) and then within that sort they are placed with roommates.

Yes, we were discussing how/if comments on the freshman housing application can/might sway assignment. The FDO is very good about figuring where a person might thrive, and with whom. They design the dorm arrangements with a personal and deft touch...lovely Harvard.
