How does "the Dartmouth Plan" work?

As I understand it, students must be on campus, freshman and senior years,
there are summer terms (optional?), work terms (how long?)

I'd love to find out how it works.

Many thanks in advance.

Sophomore summer isn't optional and it's basically the only summer that students are on campus. A work term would be the normal ten week term that a student otherwise would have been on campus during the sophomore or junior year.

you must be on campus fall, winter and spring term your freshman year and your senior year, and the summer after your sophomore year. because you are there sophomore summer, you get one other term off. you can take this off term any other term you want. you can also do other summer terms for credit and then take more terms off during the year. in addition, foreign study terms are very popular and you can take up to three of them. so aside from the 7 terms you must be on campus you can arrange the other terms any way that works for you.

This is such a wonderful idea. And it makes it easy for people to take
a term off to volunteer on a presidential campaign, atend an overseas
program... are these popular ways to use the time?

Thanks, Gellino and DartMom, for helping me understand how it works.

D is currently a jr and this is her D plan

freshman year (fws) on campus
Sophomore year (fws, sophomore summer ) on campus
Junior Fall - FSP (study abroad)
Junior winter- Off (internship)
Junior sping on camus
Senior year on campus

the only exception to being on campus soph summer is if you take the Russian fsp which is only offered in summer. But, it fulfills the soph summer requirement. However, not sure why anyone would want to miss out on Camp Dartmouth in the summer.
