How does work study work?

Hi, I am awarded 2,000 in federal work study this year and was wondering how does it work? If I work in the dining commons, will they give me extra money for working or will it just be dispersed as part of my income? Can anyone help clear this up for me? Thanks in advance.

you can get a max of $2000 through work study at the dining commons which means the govt pays a portion of you salary. after you reach the 2k, the employer may decide to keep you if they decide they want you and can pay your full salary.

the $2000 you earn thru work study DOES NOT count as income for the next years FAFSA (pretty cool).

otherwise it’s another normal job with the paycheck and such. you can earn the $2000 through one, two, or three quarters it’s up to you…

there’s a work study Job Board on UCSB’s finaid website…check it out Sept 1: <a href=“Sign In”>https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/workstudy/Recipients/Login.asp</a>
if you try to get a job elsewhere, it has to be work-study approved if you want it to count as such.

Hmm, I worked in the dining commons last year with no work study (Freshman year) but will it matter if I use up the work study or not this upcoming year? (Pretty sure I’ll be working in the dining commons again this year)

does NOT lead to a higher rate per hour.

@gooddriver, Work Study does not carry over the next year…

I worked in the dining commons for the 09-10 year, and that in my financial aid award letter it said I was awarded work study for the 10-11 year, sorry if i caused anyconfusion

not sure what your question is. if you are asking if last year’s work will affect your work study this year, the answer is no.
