How does your school teach AP Spanish?

In my school everybody in AP Spanish is a native Spanish speaker and the teacher only speaks in Spanish. How does it work in other schools?

It’s all online. Last year they scheduled the class at the same time in the same room with Spanish III so the teacher couldn’t really help.

I’m supposed to take AP spanish, but they put me on Spanish 1 even though I’m native to the language… But since I take the notes from the students, they mostly just read stories and learn new definitions…

There are 2 classes of AP Spanish at my school. It’s just anyone who is on their 4th year of Spanish.

In AP Spanish Lang, most people were not native speakers (mostly because we don’t have many native speakers in our school) and the teacher only spoke Spanish, VERY rarely English to clarify a complex topic.

In AP Spanish Lit, it’s much smaller and it’s all native speakers plus me, a Chinese girl, and an Indian girl. There is absolutely no English spoken in the classroom. At this point, we don’t learn the language anymore, we’re expected to be completely fluent, which everyone in the class is by now. There are no more vocab/grammar quizzes, instead our tests are just 40 minute in-class essays analyzing 12th-15th century Spanish literature.

The jump from Lang to Lit was huge. Lang was a joke class for me, but Lit is probably my hardest class now, especially considering the 40+ pages of reading per night and 2-3 page essays every other day. The teacher in our school takes it VERY seriously.

And you have to complete Spanish 5 before you can take AP Lang in our school, and then you have to take AP Lang before you can take AP Lit. Basically everybody who’s in Lit now has either skipped a level, or did the accelerated 4/5 class, which condenses two years of material into one.

We have to speak only Spanish in class unless it’s a really confusing topic . There are 4 native speakers in a class of 12 people . They need 15 people to run the class and we had 16 at first then 4 dropped .

We use abriendo paso lectura and grammatical . We present news articles sometimes and so far we’ve read la casa de bernarda alba and cajas de cart
