How easy is it to transition from LA to a small town?

I’ve gotten into UCR, UCSB, Occidental, Emory, NYU CAS, and Grinnell, and I’m leaning towards going to Grinnell right now as a Biology major. The only problem I have with it is how small the surrounding area is, and I’d like to know more about it.

I’m used to Asian food and lots of shopping, so how hard do you think it’ll be to get used to a small town in the middle of Iowa? Have any current students had this problem too? Was homesickness hard to get over?

I would about swear that half the student population here is from Cali. Don’t worry, just come to South campus and you’ll feel right at home.

Hi Shuisazn, I also answered your post on the college search forum. The other thread on the Grinnell forum about location describes the surrounding area.

No matter where you go, college life is bound to have its stresses and its ups and downs. There may be times when you wish you could have the comforts of home. But, college is a time for enormous personal growth. At a place like Grinnell, you will be surrounded by a wonderful community of students, professors and the many kind people who work in different administrative and supportive services at the college. The towns people are very friendly, too! Many of your fellow students will be far from home, so your experience will be a shared one in that regard.

In my opinion, a person has the rest of their life to live in a big city, but only one opportunity to have the kind of experience that attends a small, liberal arts college community can provide.
