Now I'm not looking at IVY leagues, but after college, I hope to land a job in California or else hopefully working for a big company like Microsoft. I live in Michigan and am currently a student at Oakland University which prob none of you have heard of. Will companies from California and Big Companies from Microsoft most likely hire someone from a more recognizable name like Michigan State University or University of Michigan rather than say Valparasio, Oakland U., Grand Valley State, etc.?

yeah, UMichigan is probably the biggest name for that, having leading business and engineering programs, as well as a large reputation.

certainly someone graduating from any of those colleges can work for a big west coast company, i just don’t think they recruit at the campus. you can always work there later in life, maybe only 5 years later, but i just dont see it as a first job opportunity from oakland u. if you do well though you can get a great job out of college, and go to get an MBA if youre interested. then theres a much larger job market.

A college does not “carry” a student. One must make it happen. However, if a company recruits on your campus, your chances are obviously enhanced. Microsoft recruits at the University of Michigan (Ross, CS and CoE). Last year, Microsoft hired 7 undergraduates from Ross full time and 5 undergraduates from Ross for summer internships. Microsoft is actually the third most active recruiter at Ross this year, also hiring 15 MBAs full time and another 6 for summer internships.

This isn’t an isolated event. In 2006, Microsoft hired 8 undergrads from Ross full time and 9 undergrads from Ross for summer internships. Again, Microsoft was one of the top 3 recruiters at Ross in 2006, hiring 11 MBAs full time and another 8 MBAs for summer internships. In 2005, Microsoft hired 5 BBAs from Ross full time and in 2004, they hired 7 BBAs from Ross full time.

Microsoft also recruits substantially at the College of Engineering. They hired 9 Engineers in 2007, 10 in 2006, 8 in 2005 and 14 in 2004.

Cisco, Google, Intel and IBM also recruit at Ross and the College of Engineering.

Obviously, the University of Michigan has a well established and long-standing relationship with Microsoft. In the last 4 years, they have recruited over 70 undergrads from the University of Michigan.

Also, keep in mind that CS and CE are not very popular majors at Michigan. Altogether, roughly 250-300 undergrads graduate each year and Ross only has 350 or so undergrads per graduating class so there isn’t a great deal of competition for those jobs.

I am not sure how actively Microsoft recruits at MSU or the other schools in Michigan.
