I'm just wondering, how far apart are the two schools? And about how much time would it take to get from one to the other?

Using public transportation: about 1.5-2 hours
Using a car: about 1-1.5 hours (depending on traffic)

Google maps times the drive at 48 minutes. That's incredibly ideal.

Thanks! That's a little farther than I thought.

When I visited Northwestern and UChicago last Spring Break, it took my only 30-45 minutes by public transportation, but I might be wrong since it seemed like a while ago.

Depends, if you are leaving Chicago you can take the bus to Garfield in about 15 minutes. From there you can get on the green line and take that to the loop. If it is a rush period, the purple line can take you most of the way to Davis Street (closest stop to NU) without stopping. (I think Davis is like..the 6th stop from the loop if the purple line is running express. If the purple line is not running express.. well.. hop on the red line and take a nap. I took the train two days ago, non express, and I think it took roughly 2 hours and 20minutes.

wow, 45 minutes or 2 hours 20 min., that's quite a difference.

It's all in the traffic and for public transportation, the time of the day.

It's a $45, 45-minute cab ride with Saturday (slow) traffic. I did it the last time I was in Chicago.

I've thought about this too, actually, since I might be interested in seeing some of the theater productions at NU if I'm at Chicago next year.

It seemingly takes forever to get to Northwestern from Chicago because once you get off Lakeshore Drive the roads are basically residential and convoluted.

I've got a post-doc next year at Northwestern so we are in the process of moving up to Evanston. The few times I've driven it off rush hour, it's been 45 minutes from Hyde Park. Rush hour 1:30-2:00 (mostly because all of the local highway construction is making a mess of rush hour traffic). The total distance is only about 20-25 miles, but you have to cross the entire length of the city.

I've found a good public transportation option to be the Metra - 15 minutes or so from Hyde Park to downtown, walk across the loop (about 15-20 minutes), and then take a north bound Metra to Evanston (another 20 minutes or so). Total trip is about 1:30 and they actually have the trains scheduled almost perfectly so you only have about a 5-10 minute wait in between departures. I did this a great deal last year when I was lecturing at Northwestern and it was actually quite nice.

This whole discussion makes me laugh, just because in my town 20-25 miles would never take more than 30 minutes. Ahhhh wonderful city congestion.

this is like driving from shea stadium to yankee stadium on mapquest takes 8 minutes hahaha

really... wow that would never happen in a million years

yup, but if somehow you were able to drive the speed limit......
