how good does 3 year varsity basketball look on college app?

my brother did 2 year varsity basketball in his soph and senior year, with varsity tennis junior year. he currently goes to princeton.
people say just being an athlete is good enough, but im wondering if a so called real sport such as football, baseball, basketball would look better than something such as swimming. thanks.

How similar to your brother are you in other areas? A sport is one component. Unless you’re a recruitable player, it’s the same as another applicant being in orchestra or working as a shift mgr at Burger King for the last few years – sports (unless you’re looking at the Service Academies) is neither necessary nor sufficient for admissions to very selective schools.

Your hierarchy of FB, BB, hoops versus swimming is very immature too.

Agreed with above. Unless you’re a recruited athlete, colleges don’t care about your skills at a particular sport. They want to see commitment to a specific field which you’re passionate about, and leadership positions in that field. And no, being an athlete is definitely not “good enough” to get accepted to Princeton.
