Edit: I meant application in the title.

I'm a junior and have a chance to work (for free) in a lab at the University of Columbia over the summer, but I'm wondering if it is worth taking. Do colleges like to see these sort of things or is it just like any other extra curricular (like sports)?

It looks very good. Better than most ECs (like sports), particularly if you are planning to go into a science field. Lab work isn’t just an extra-curricular; its real world experience, and that’s valuable.

It looks REALLY good if you can do a competitive Siemens/Intel project that flows out of your research

Research is an increasingly common extracurricular for the science-minded. Cal Newport called it our generation’s student body president. It’s unlikely to mean much unless pursued at a high level, as UT mentioned.

@UT84321 - Can you elaborate on that or send me in the right direction for information on how to get involved? I am unfamiliar with that program.

By the way, I meant Colombia University (The Ivy) in case there was any confusion.

bump… this board moves really fast compared to the others
