how good of a processor do you need for science major coursework?

486DX dominates all.

depends on the science. Biology or nuclear physics (with apologies to all the biologists out there)?

Intel core 2 duo is adequate for most. Intel i7 if you have really demanding applications.

really anything will do.

welcome to the age of just-good-enough computing

Core i7 is probably overkill for college students (I have two of them at my desk right now) and it’s a very expensive solution as the motherboards are costly right now. There will be far cheaper motherboards in a few months for Core i5.

If you need more power than Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad may be the best solution.

There will be 6 and 8 processor Core i7 chips out in the next 9 months for those that need a supercomputer on their desktops.
