How is the overall quality of life at Duke? Do students like the food, the campus, the people, the faculty, the weather, the athletic facilities, the commute to each campus, etc.? Does it foster a learning environment? Is there a balance between work and play? Please respond honestly, and thanks for any input.

i just got back from bdd, and honestly, the people i’ve met at duke are the most fun, friendly, and happy group of people. i’m sure there are some who aren’t happy, but this didn’t seem to be the case when i went. everyone was just so inviting and happy to be at duke. i’m sure the sunny weather helps too ;)

^ i agree

everyone seems chilled and well rested. there always seems to be something going on on campus.

The students at Duke will complain, as will the students everywhere.

The food is not as varied, good, hot/cold, seasoned/bland as they would like. The dorm rooms are too old/modern-sterile, small, oddly shaped, etc. The classes are graded too hard, require too much reading, have too may projects, etc. The culture is too hook-up, stifled by the rules, greek, drinking focused, etc. I am a parent. I have heard many of the above and more. Our son’s biggest “problem” is that there are many more attractive options than he can accommodate (but he is in engineering).

Students grouse about whatever it is they don’t like, large or small, and part of that is the feeling that Duke is open to changing.

But the question I would ask if I were a prospective student is: how many would prefer to be somewhere else?

Not true: The dorm rooms are too old/modern-sterile, small, oddly shaped, etc. The classes are graded too hard, require too much reading, have too may projects, etc.

Pretty much tree: The food is not as varied, good, hot/cold, seasoned/bland as they would like. The culture is too hook-up, stifled by the rules, greek, drinking focused, etc. I am a parent. I have heard many of the above and more.

mafool is so right.

So few. <3 Duke. I’ve never heard anyone say “I hate Duke,” and be serious. And I’ve heard that from friends at other schools. Makes things kind of awkward when you don’t complain too, but I guess the amazingness that is Duke is worth the awkwardness. :p
