Hey everyone!

This has been nagging me for awhile so here it goes.

Where I live:

86+ = A. 4.0
73-85 = B 3.0
66-72 = C+ 2.5

I got a 72 in math 10 (even though I tried super hard), but got 95 in math 11. Currently 100 in math 12 and got 720 on SAT math (reasoning).

I got 82 in science 10 (again, tried really hard), but got 92 in Bio 11 and 88 in Earth Sciences 11.

Again, math/sciences are really not my forte, and I'm applying for IR. My grades definitely show an upward trend and I have a 2260 in SAT (800 CR, 720 M, 740 WR) and 750 in SAT LIt, 700 in SAT World, and 800 in SAT Chinese. I also self studied five APs. World (5), Euro (5), Comp Gov (5), Human Geo (5), Psych (4). My school doesn't offer any humanities APs (we only have AP calc but I'm not good enough to take that).

So can my 3.81 GPA be set off by good APs, SATs, and an upward trend? I applied to Penn CAS ED btw.

Thanks in advance!

False advertising. there is nothing urgent about an ED application already sent, deadline over.

@BrownParent But Im going with the idea that I’m deferred from Penn and I have a lot of regular apps to do.

Bump!

BrownParent’s reply was appropriate. Penn is the only school you mentioned, and you said nothing about your chances after being deferred. So now you have to waste another post naming the other schools you’re interested in.

And it’s still not URGENT

Sigh. Can’t people just answer my question? I’m sorry I put urgent.

I tend to be of the opinion that there’s not too much (except maybe being a URM or recruited athlete) that really offsets a poor GPA - it’s probably the most important thing you submit. That said, it’s not really a concern for you. Your GPA is not a huge problem. A 3.81 is very respectable and still well within range for an Ivy, especially with an upward trend. What is your class rank like? Do other kids with GPAs and schedules like yours get into top tier schools?

Apply to some other schools you like and can afford and where the admission rate is above 30-40%. Deep breaths. You’re going to be fine :).

Also, are you an international student? That will affect any other advice we give you.

Sigh. Can’t you just post a list of schools?

@butterfreesnd Thanks for the great advice! Yes, I am Canadian. I am trying to apply to schools that are need blind for Canadians (Penn, UChicago etc). All my safeties are in Canada. We don’t calculate rank or GPA - I just calculated mine using my history, language, math, sciences, and English marks.

We’ve sent two kids to Penn. Our extracurriculars are the same. I have the same reference teachers as them. They had a 2300+ SAT though, but they are attending Wharton and Jerome Fisher. Our schedules are essentially the same aside from the fact that they are very good at sciences and math, so took bio 12, chem 12, and the like. They all had 4.0s. We all self-studied around 5 APs and scored very well on them all.

The only thing messing up my GPA is my lackluster grade 10 math and sciences marks :(
