How I Improved from 170s on PSAT to an eventual 2310 SAT I.

I'm sure one of the HYPSM is Yale since I've seen you post on this thread:
"Yale a grated community inside a ghetto"

Who cares which HYPS he got into? The point is that he significantly improved his SAT score, awesome job!

Um, what exactly is a counterargument? Could you give an example?

Simply put, a counterargument refutes an argument by providing counterexamples.

In your essay, you are to take a stance on a prompt and defend it. However, as we all should know, defending a broad topic is close to impossible. You can give your essay more authority / integrity by admitting certain exceptions and by providing counterexamples.

I usually admit counterexamples in the conclusion paragraph as one or two sentences though, and not as a separate paragraph.

That is also exactly what I do Aero :D

I did badly on my PSAT as well. I need to improve, this inspires me. The SAT is definitely different from any test I’ve taken before. I’m so used to meticulously checking everything.

I went from 190 PSAT in sophomore year to 2310 SAT I in December senior year. And I’m an international student. I only spent 1 month plus to prep for SAT I on my own. It’s possible if you try hard enough. Anw hats off to the OP!

I just got the College Board 2010 SAT prep book. Is that any good? Do you recommend i buy Princeton review and a Barron’s book?
I took a practice SAT test that was previously administered. I got a low score of 1640. I know it’s terrible. I am aiming for at least a 2000. I am an upcoming Junior and i plan to take the SAT in January, March and October. Do you think it is reasonable to aim for a 2000? I understand I’ll have to work very hard to improve my score, but is it reasonable to aim for a 2000 when i only scored a 1640 on a practice SAT?
Thanks.

Is there any good SAT workbook that specifically targets the Math section. Math is my weakest subject. I need a test book that explains how to solve a variety of problems rather than a practice book.

Thanks.

^Gruber’s is a good review book for math (from what I hear).

@ripz ur score is simply awsome.=p
And I need ur help…
I just registered for the Dec SAT and now I find myself in the middle no nowhere.I bought the princeton review guide and I’ve taken a practice test.I am horrible at the CR and Writing section. This will be my first and last chance to take SAT…I know its too risky but i have no other option.I would be really grateful if you suggest me some of ur tips or anything that will help me.I am willing to give it as much hardwork and time it needs!

ripz, uve greatly inspired me…thanks alott!!!

wow,congrats and thanks!

Now, OP, you deserve a big round of applause. I wish all of you are ready for it! Here is my point of view, that is supported by solid evidence.

SAT (I) = VERYYYYYY TOUGH WORK + TRUST + YEARS OF SOLID WORK + FINALLY, LUCK.
Note: Luck won’t do anything if you aren’t prepared.

My case is as follows: Since late July 2010 till Oct the 8th, I have been working pretttttttttttyyyyyyyy hard, I VERY RARELY watched TV and literally, NEVER WENT OUT. I was done with Barron’s 3500 words, starting with a daily rate of 26 words, moving to 30, to 40, to 50, to 60 and reaching as far as 130 words per day, that my Mum viewed me as a sedulous maniac, I was done with CB, 30+ Real Tests, all the required Math syllabus, Barron’s “How to prepare for the SAT” and ‘2400’, PR’s Cracking and 11 PTests and a lot of such books. And when I say I studied I mean I died working veryyyy diligently.
A friend of my father was to get paralyzed from the plethora of my studying hours. And, four days ago, I have gone to a tutor, whom I thought will point out my defects, but, instead, he told me, “Did you come here to embarass me??!!!”

But, ALTHOUGH ALLLLLL OF THIS, I got … Well, I got NOTHING, with every meaning the word would suggest.

Note please, that since my childhood, I have been a straight A* student, praised by my teachers, envied by my classmates-of course, not all of them, half were my friends.
And, because I am getting REALLYYYYYY EXHAUSTED BECAUSE OF THIS, In October the 9th, I got a DISGUSTING 1790, I know that you view this with contempt, but, I became very senseless that I don’t care for anything.

After all, what is so unique about wanting to be a doctor, a writer and a good philanthroper!!!

Alright, guys, blame my emotional instability and by the way, GREAT POST!!

Listen, OP, you got to know that you deserve another big round of applause. Congrats for the matriculation in 2 of HYPS. The method you mentioned for solving the CR passages, but, sorrowfully, after reading a lot of the strategies mentioned in Barron’s, CB, PR, etcetra…
I have diverged from my regular method and eventually, had my level going downnnnnn!!
Anyway, I followed YOUR strategy or returned back to mine and Thanks God, had my errors number elevating from 8 errors to 2!!!

Good job done, but i would really like to point out that learning the barrons sat vocabulary can be an extremely difficult task and to memorize the whole barrons vocabulary but even if you are able to memorize the whole vocabulary, its hard to recall the words that u learned, so i think its much better to learn the 1000 sparknotes vocabulary and then if u have ample amount of time, then go for the 3500 barrons vocab…

I started practicing SAT a few days ago, I took a practice test nd scored 1500 .Is there anyway I can reach +2000 in 4 months ?

I’m glad you did so well, however I don’t think that comparing your PSAT to your eventual SAT is a good indicator.

For me, I took the PSAT my sophomore year. I didn’t slack or anything and I still got 137. Then I took the SAT, no prep or anything, and got an 1890. Because of this, I don’t think that PSAT determines SAT very well, even if the content is similar. At my school, PSAT is taken sophomore year, while the SAT is taken junior and senior year.

So, don’t fret if you do not get the PSAT you want, because I improved 520 points without doing a damn thing, and now I’m studying for a 2100.

I have around 1000 days. For the 3500 word list, would you recommend 4 words a day, 5 words a day, or 10 words a day?

Thanks!

I take the SAT on Dec 7. Better start memorizing now!

Thanks for the tips!
