2400 in October...yea right....well...no really

Ok....

I need a game plan guys. My first go at the SAT's ended with a 2000. There is no reason I can't get a 2400 (or atleast a 200point boost)

Any ideas? How many practice tests should I take between now and then? Should I take a prep course, or should I hire a private tutor?

Thanks

if you're already at a pretty good score (2000) then a prep course/tutor isn't for you.
CR: I'd recommend doing some serious library-crawling (read periodicals like Time, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Economist--they're quicker and more interesting ways to get Critical Reading skills than reading a useless prep book or trudging through classic literature)
Writing: Buy a prep book. Prepping for writing is simple studying. Learn grammar.
Math: Same as writing. Practice as many problems as you can from the Blue Book (or from any source. For math, it doesn't matter what book you use. It's the skills that matter.) Master the concepts that are giving you trouble; simply doing problems isn't everything.
You can do it, I think the gap between 2000 and 2200 is easily made up for through studying.

Hmmm, well it's practically rather impossible to improve 400 pts. but anyway. I hope that the one you have to focus on most in math since this is consider the easiest to improve on [since it's very concept based and problems are often repeated though presented in a different manner] so for math I just say take a few practice tests and look at which concepts you seem to have a lacking for and then consider why you constantly get it wrong, then there's writing which is considerably harder to improve than math though much easier to improve on then CR. Basically look at grammar rules and the ones you really want to watch out for [or at least personally] are awkwardness and parallelism which for some people click easily and ]from what i've seen] for others it's dramatically hard, so just learn to pick up mistakes quickly by knowing what mistakes they are most likely to put on the test and obviously be hesitant to immediately put no error and make sure you give enough focus for each statement. Also, hmmm the essay, well I B.s.ed my way through them both times and I got a 10 so it's just if they like your writing style [and have a really strong opening b/c this is what they'll absorb most b/c they can most likely spend their time reading this first paragraph] and make sure it appears long b/c they're all about quantity from what i've seen. CR, really the hardest to improve on since it's easily the most random of the sections having to cope with a new reading passage everytime and so on, so i guess take practices tests, have good context clues and so forth, and good luck.

get strategies for attacking writing and cr questions from both Barrons and Kaplan SAT 2400. They have been highly recommended for good strategies.

Is there any prep books geared towards the more advanced material. I mean that it seems like I have to go through a lot of basic material to learn the more advanced stuff. something that focuses on the test taking strategies that aren't the common sense you hear everywhere?

The more specific stat is:

710 math
650 writing
640 verbal

Is that an auto-reject for the elites?

O wow^, those are the exact scores I got on my first test. And no, it's not an auto-reject...more like a slim chance (w/o hooks of course).

maybe we are the same mind averageazn...lol

can you post what you did to raise your scores and what your new scores were....

thanks

Also
If i take the Sat and get a 2200 for example, will the adcoms think the same of a person who got a 2200 on their first try and didn't do it again?

I think if you get a 2200 they will look at it just as highly as they would someone who got it on their first try. A 2000 is already a great score, and it would show you worked hard, and they know people tend to do better the second time, I think.

miss independent... i really appreciate you saying that. Whenever I take that 2000 to the What are My Chances? Forum, everyone seems to laugh at it.

Hire a tutor.

Hi everybody:

I'm goin' to sit for the SAT I in Nov.Yesterday, I sat down and took a diagnostic test in Barron 2400 with a view to getting hold of my present level and scored 640 on the CR section ( before taking it, I haven't prepared anything for the SAT ) . How feasible is it if my goal is 740 or 750 ? :)
Inputs appreciated. Thanks a bunch :)

Don't worry about it oracle, my score was 2000 too and I had a few snickers about it, though at least they weren't the last ones laughing :D

Yea... I don't know how everyone on this board gets, or says they get, such high scores. I have a 4.0 so I'm not use to people getting higher scores than me across the board. It seems like 1 in 100 posters will admit to having a score in the 1900s. I know everyone says "it's because cc's are the top applicants" , but come on, we are not that smart.

cheers for 2000 :D

I think people who visit these boards are actually serious about education...so the chances are they're smarter than the average joe.

^ lol or they just get more serious about education when they come here and see the people who are serious about education :)
