So, I'm asking the reverse question. If you write a extremely good essay, do you then have a chance even if your credentials aren't exactly Ivy League worthy?</p>

<p>Essays can easily make or break you. It is a huge mistake to underestimate their importance. Write unique essays. The absolute worst thing you can do in your essays is reiterate your list of ECs. Trust me, adcoms have heard a million times how (band/robotics/volunteering) helped you learn (teamwork/responsibility/humility). Don’t do it. Tell them something about you that they couldn’t otherwise learn from your resume. Differentiate yourself.</p>
