How Important are Recommended Academic Units?

On different websites and books, it says that the recommended units of english are 4, maths are 4, science are 4, history are 4, foreign language are 4, and academic elective are 4. Next year I’m planning to drop an AP history course in exchange for AP Micro and AP GAP, and an AP language course for AP Environmental Science. If I don’t reach the recommended course units because of this, how will it affect my chances?

Admissions are looking for students who demonstrate passion and take the most difficult courses available. So if you high school college councilor will check off the ‘most difficult’ box for you (which is school dependent) and you get straight A’s, then I would say you haven’t hurt your chances. Of course this assumes you don’t plan on selecting a major in History or related fields like Journalism.

AP Macro and AP US Gov’t are social science classes, as is AP [whichever] history. Since they are in the same bucket, taking one over the other is not issue.

If you’ve reached level 4 in the foreign language, even without an AP, there is no issue. If you will not have completed level 4, it may slightly impede your chances since you will be competing against thousands of other applicants who have completed the recommended preparation.

Thank you so much! I’m currently enrolled in French 5, so I’m feeing a lot better
