My S is going into sophomore year and I gather a lot of helpful information from this site. He is not inclined to continue a sport next year (he has other interests). I'm wondering how "necessary" a sport is to have an excellent shot at a top school (especially an Ivy), assuming one is otherwise a strong candidate. Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks!

Well, it can be very important if the kid is talented enough to be recruited to play the sport in college. Apart from that, I think its like any other EC–good if it shows something good about you. I will note, however, that the most selective schools are interesting in personal achievements by the applicants, and not achievements by a team you belong to. So if you are a bench-warmer, it doesn’t help you much that your team won state championship. Also (and this is somewhat controversial), I don’t think selective colleges are likely to be impressed by tremendous commitment, hard work, and time put into a sport (or any EC) if the kid isn’t particularly accompliahed as an individual.

So, let him pursue his other interests, unless he’s recruitable.

One thing: I think a sport may be essential if you want to go to one of the service academies.
