How important is community service?

I'm an athlete and it is hard to find time to consistently commit to community service. I'm about to enter my senior year of high school. I'm worried I don't have enough community service. I might start helping in a soup kitchen. Will this hurt my chances?

no, community service is just considered another EC from a college admission standpoint. There is no separate community service admission requirement/category. You do not need community service, especially if you have meaningful ECs, .

It won’t hurt you, unless your school or program (ie. IB) have a requirement that you need to fulfill for graduation, if you have other strong extracurricular activities on your application. It looks bad to have a blank section on your application, so it wouldn’t hurt to have something to enter. A strong commitment to something, like a varsity sport, impresses more than the casual effort to fill out a resume.

community svc as a pre-requisite is a myth other than what woog says about your school’s requirements for it.
