I don't know about the schools you'll apply to, but if you want to go to a top school you should be within the top 10 people, I'd say.

Or at least top 5% if you have some other OUTSTANDING qualities.

Actually depends on how good your high school is, because if you go to the best high school in the nation, you might not even have to be top 10%

you just scared the hell out of me.

oh, come on
instead of being a pretend authority, why not just advice this person to look up the colleges s/he's interested in and see what % come from what rank?

Plus everybody knows that rank is looked at in relation to the kind of school you attend, so there can't be one categorical answer.

lighten up

Not all schools post these statisitics. Brown posts theirs ... its pretty much what miss zanna is quoting ... and Brown's admission rate is generous compared to, say, Harvard or Yale.

Here is the link to the page on Brown's website:

My opinion is that you should apply where you want - but be very down-to-earth as to what actually are your matches and likelies.

Rank is important because it lets schools see how you do compared to people who have the same environment and resources to work with.

If you're interested in the Ivies you MUST be within the top 10%. Although there have been cases of exceptions, they're very, very rare.

say u are not in top 5 % is it better just to not list ur rank?

Depends on your school, like I said before, you can't just say not top 5% is bad.
Your counselor sends in your rank and your GPA and all that stuff anyway.

That's why I like UC Admissions Process. No class rank required!

There are so many high schools now that do not rank at all that class rank has become less important. The statistics listed on college websites are only for those students whose high schools do rank.

So bad, my high school ranks (not exact numbers, just in %, but still the school's still RANKING people)

haha what's sad about my school is that it includes summer school classes in the GPA.
I'm the only one in the top 5 people who hasn't taken summer school to raise my GPA.
It's not my fault I don't want to spend $700 per summer to raise my GPA by 0.0001 :]

you're in the top 5 people? :0

Yeah #4.
Without any summer school credits either ;]

how does that summer classes work?

i am selecting class in like 2 weeks

ap english and honors anotomy & phsyilogy
or english 121(college course taught in my high school) and ap physics or bio

my school limits the amount of AP i take to 4

i have already decided to take calc bc, modern euro, and stat

I am friends with all the top kids 1-20 at my school. It just really depends on what type of person they are. I am no science person, so AP chem is not for me...and photography (for three years) is, making my rank lower just because i have an interest in a different subject. However, the people who are taking AP chem are challenging themselves (although my photo classes got pretty time-consuming), so i think rank is a good indicator of how hard a person can work, not necessarily how smart they are.

Rank is pretty important if your GPA is percieved to be low. At my school a GPA of 80-100 is an A, at most schools 90-100 is an A. My GPA is 83 but i'm in the top 10% of my class.

top quarter, 94 W, medical magnet school (of 180 ppl)

how's that look?

B407 - 800-100=A? Wow..
