How important is recommendation letter?

Will an average recs do any harm to my chances of getting accepted?
( if teachers put a check on 'below average' or 'average' )

When should I ask senior year teachers for recommendation letter? is November OK??

The checkmarks don’t mean much, but yes, average recs will hurt you when applying to top schools. LORs are much more important than the interview, but less important than grades/scores. At any top school though, good recommendations is extremely important.

You should ask at least a month before they’re due.

Schools show how important recommendations are in their Common Data Set. If you check your schools and they are not very important it won’t make that much difference.

The only senior teachers that I asked for recommendations were those who I have had previously. Although I waived my right to view any of the letters, I was told by my GC that if any of them weren’t stellar, she would suggest that I ask other teachers. Possibly, you could speak to your GC about the quality of your recommendations. I think November is a good time to ask your senior teachers, as it will give ample time for them to get to know you and your abilities. Good luck!
