<p>The checkmarks don’t mean much, but yes, average recs will hurt you when applying to top schools. LORs are much more important than the interview, but less important than grades/scores. At any top school though, good recommendations is extremely important.</p>
<p>You should ask at least a month before they’re due.</p>
<p>Schools show how important recommendations are in their Common Data Set. If you check your schools and they are not very important it won’t make that much difference.</p>
<p>The only senior teachers that I asked for recommendations were those who I have had previously. Although I waived my right to view any of the letters, I was told by my GC that if any of them weren’t stellar, she would suggest that I ask other teachers. Possibly, you could speak to your GC about the quality of your recommendations. I think November is a good time to ask your senior teachers, as it will give ample time for them to get to know you and your abilities. Good luck!</p>
