I was named a National Merit Semifinalist, and was wondering how important the essay is in becoming a Finalist. I have a lot of essays to write for my colleges, so I was hoping I could write a quick essay and be done with it.

The essay is pro forma as far as making NMF. It may be a differentiator for the $2500 NMSC awards, however.
Thanks, I’m not really looking for the NMSC awards, just trying to get the NMF award at Alabama. I have a lot of essays to write for other colleges so this takes at least a little weight off my shoulders.
I believe my D was able to recycle one of her other essays for the NMF essay. Don’t worry too much about it.
I think we are all in agreement that a “decent” essay will suffice. On the other hand, you’re looking at a lot of money from Alabama if you progress to finalist, so maybe you should rethink the “write a quick essay and be done with it” plan. Your extra effort may be unnecessary, but why risk it? Good luck!
