How important is the guidance counselor's opinion when applying to...?

I want to apply to some of the most selective colleges, such as MIT and CalTech. The little problem I have is that my guidance counselor really, really does not like me. She lied about requirements for a certain class, and I emailed the state department of education to find out the truth. I wanted the dep. of ed. to respond to me, but they decided to be even more helpful and contact the school directly, so my guidance counselor was most likely lectured. She decided to then lecture me about how inappropriate it was for me to take "such drastic measures." Every time I have to get her to do something for me, I can tell that she's still... unhappy with me. Otherwise, I'm a good student-4.0 GPA on 4.0 scale and took Calculus as a sophomore- and will definitely have at least decent comments from my teachers. I was just curious if anyone knows if possibly negative comments from my counselor will hurt me or if they may be overshadowed by positive performance and remarks on the rest of my application. Thanks. ~N2K

if it wasnt important why would they ask for it? but dont worry, they probably dont weigh it too much since its impossible for the guidance counselor to know everything about every kid under his or her belt

It might be a good idea for you to request a switch in guidance counselors before school starts.

Thanks for the advice, you guys. It's too bad my school only has one guidance counselor, though. I guess I have a school year of sucking up to do, right? ;) Thanks again. ~N2K

Perhaps all that this "counselor" submits is a profile of the school which you are entitled to receive a copy of and in that case you have no problem.

Trust your instincts...counselors don't always know what's best for you, and sometimes they'll underestimate you.

counselors aren't a big deal when it comes to applying, they don't help with much other than paperwork. take a look at the form he has to submit for you to get an idea of what he'll say. if it's really bothering you, considering explaining it in an essay, but since your school only has one conselour, it won't be a big problem.

BTW, I'm a rising junior who also took Calc as a sophmore and I'm looking at MIT and Caltech too. Let me know how you do!

F the school and the counselor...you are in control
