How important would upward grade trends be?

Specifically in my situation.

I'm currently at a CC, halfway done with my sophomore year. I started off my freshman year horribly, with mostly all C's except for some B's I got in my spring semester. My first year GPA was a 2.4, effectively killing all my transfer chances. I decided to really step my game up this summer, and I took summer classes where I ended up getting my first college A. This semester I took 19 credits and got 5 A's and 2 B+'s, bringing me up to a 3.0. I should also note that in classes for my majors (English and Sociology), I have never gotten anything lower than a B+

At a glance, I know a 3.0 GPA really isn't impressive, but with such an upward trend, would it help my chances?

I'm currently applying to Rutgers University (NB and Newark) and USC (I know it's a long shot) so any feedback would be appreciated, especially from people who have been or know others in a similar situation. Thanks!

(I also have AP and other college credits I earned in high school)

You might want to apply to more schools, USC is definitely a reach for you, even for anyone transferring with a <3.5. Rutgers might be a little easier, but look at a bit more middle level schools (I don’t know what your preferences are and how much research you’ve done, so if you haven’t done much research, get started)

upwards trends are groovy.
