How influential is a Penn coach's recommendation for admissions?

I will be getting a recommendation from the Penn coach for rowing. Does this mean anything from an admissions standpoint?

It means a lot if you are recruited.

Has the coach suggested to you that you are getting a likely letter?

On the flip side. if you are not a recruited athlete, it will carry no more weight than any other rec.

Lots of Ivy rowing recruiting chat. Some very knowledgeable parents in there.

While true, the OP is not a recruit, and posting repetitively, particularly in a forum where it does not belomg, is a violation of Terms of Service.

@skieurope do we know OP isn’t a recruit?
From what I’ve gleamed, if a coach is encouraging someone they think they can get in outside of the recruiting circle (the “soft support” discussions and if it exists) they usually don’t phrase it as a “recommendation”. Think we need more info from OP.

@tonymom Yes, it was stated in a post in Athletic Recruits, which I deleted as being repetitive to this thread, but I’ll quote it below:

Ok…and just saw OP is a coxswain which complicates things in that those spots are few and far between. Not impossible but less leverage.
I’d suggest asking coach what parts of transcript need to be built up to be a competitive applicant. Soft recommendation can’t hurt but only help. OP has great GPA but I’d say take the ACT and see if you don’t score better on that type of test or give SAT one more shot this fall. Good luck!
