what are the political leanings and general atmosphere? how would a gay male feel?

Like a gay male.

very open... which does not necessarily mean democrat or "liberal". most college campuses are forward-thinking and unprejudiced, and this is definitely the case at wustl. most students by far would lean more left on the political spectrum, but what's nice is that there are student groups and resources for students of all ideologies. sometimes you run into the problem of people who are "open-minded", but whenever a "conservative" or traditional stance is uttered... they are immediately bashed. you'll find this anywhere, but i think that open and accepting are very befitting terms to describe wustl.

there was an in-depth thread a page or two back about gay life on campus, which is also quite accepting and tons of activities and support on campus for students of the glbq lifestyle. st louis is an urban enough city with lots of diversity... you'll meet people of all walks of life in st louis, yet the "midwestern friendliness" comes into play with embracing everyone and learning about differences.
