A friend of mine just received the following MCAT scores:

12 in bio
12 in physical sciences
8 in verbal

Total: 32

She also got a Q on the writing section.

Her gpa will be between a 3.8 and 3.9 and she attends Cornell majoring in biological sciences.

I know there are a lot of other factors (research, ECs, recommendations, essays) but based on these numbers, does she have a reasonable chance at med schools like University of Rocester, SUNY Buffalo, NYU, and then Columbia and Cornell Weill.

Thanks for all responses!

The 8's a major problem. I think NYU/Columbia/Cornell are all out. Don't know much about Rochester or SUNY's.

Yeah, that was the concern.

Do you think the fact that she got a Q on the essay would help? She also got A's in two english courses.

Med schools don't care about writing scores.

Unless she's a URM, I wouldn't bother applying to Columbia, Cornell, or NYU with that score.

Even with a balanced 32, Columbia or Weill would've been a reach. I think their average MCAT score in the MSAR is 36 or so. 4 points is a big gap.

2007- 35.4 at CCPS matriculated student data (USNews)
2007- 34.4 at Cornell Weill matriculated student data (Cornell Weill)

The bigger issue is the 8.

Given a choice b/w 10,10,10 and 12,12,8, I think I'd rather have the 10,10,10. In other words, the score the OP has is equivalent to a balanced 30-31.

by friend you mean yourself kthx

lol .

No actually I don't mean myself.

She went through the Cornell book of past applicants and said that many Cornell students had gotten into great med schools with similar scores, so who knows.

Her pre-med adviser also encouraged her to apply to those places.

Do you think that retaking them is a good idea? She took them this summer as a rising junior, so she has some time.

From Columbia

Thanks for the responses.

Has she looked at New York Medical College? I think she'd have a decent chance there.
