How is vanderbilt in sending kids to med school [what # of premeds make it first try?

What percent of premeds make medical school/their top 3 choices for medical school when they apply

70% of Vanderbilt’s pre-med students are in med-school within a year of exiting undergraduate school. It also has the #15 ranked med-school in research in the country.

bump

70% is deceptive. A better number to find out is how many kids start off pre-med but get weeded out by the low grades given in the science/ math courses required for med school application. Half of my daughters calculus class was gone by the middle of the first semester, and a large proportion of her chem class/lab as well. That 70% is definately the survival of the fittest. What peeves me is that this is with smarter than average kids falling by the wayside. I know there are smart kids at state U., but with lesser competition?, would they have succeeded at pre-med at Vandy

On the up side, the number of applicants for med schools should decline over the next few years (due to the health care bill), so it that should make it at least a little easier to get in.

BasementCat, what makes you say that? Even due to the public option, there will still be plenty of opportunities for doctors to be hired by private insurance companies, don’t you think?

No, the “common” belief from those in the financial and insurance fields is that more and more hospitals will close (not profitable), and pharmaceutical companies will not be making as many drugs (too costly and too much liability). Doctors will not make as much $$$, so there will be fewer opportunities and people will not be choosing to be doctors.

Greater need (b/c everyone will have insurance) and many more administrators, but fewer doctors.

I doubt the health-care bill will hurt doctors. If anything, pay will go up due to a shortage of doctors since so many more people will need them.

anonmity, your logic relies on the fact that most people agree the health care LAW (no longer bill…) hurts doctors. fail :P

how hard/easy is it to get a 4.0 at vandy as a science major?

it’s tough!

I don’t think any (senior) bio major has a 4.0.

Especially since Vanderbilt is know for grade DEFLATION

Moosescream what are you talking about? How is pay going up for doctors based on the fact that it will hurt doctors? Your argument is flawed.
