So after reading The Gatekeepers, I started to research Wesleyan. It's surprisingly looking like an interestingly good fit for me. Since I want to become a doctor, I'm was just wondering how the pre-med program works.

Wesleyan is no different than any other LAC (or, research uni, for that matter) when it comes to getting into med school. Increasingly, med schools look less and less at where you went to school and focus pretty much on your gpa and how well you score on your MCATs (I also, think this is somewhat different from law schools, which are still prestige whores to some extent.) There is something called, The Medical and Health Services Panel which controls the recommendations process, so obviously, it helps to get a superlative letter of recommendation. If everything aligns perfectly, (an A- avg, a 200 on the boards) you could stand a 90% chance of getting into the med school of your choice, if not, your chances diminish accordingly. According to Wes’ Wikipedia site they’ve had everything from a 60% to a 100% admissons rate for alumni who have applied to medical school within five years of graduation; that includes science majors and non-science majors, people who’ve had changes in career plans, etc…

to sum it up in just a few sentences, you can major in whatever you want, and check in occasionally with the pre-med advisor to make sure you are taking all of the pre-med requirements (there is no pre-med major). the pre-med advisor here has been in the position for decades and knows the process… this past semester, both the Tufts and UChicago med school admission deans came to speak. as johnwesley said, Wes has a Health Professions Panel that will write you a recommendation on behalf of Wesleyan itself (which med schools love).

for Wesleyan students with at least a 3.5 GPA, the acceptance rate is around 85-88%, comparable to all the other top selective schools. above 3.7, the acceptance rate creeps close to 100%.
