How is your kid doing on the first day (week) of Spring Quarter?

If current student can give us his/her first hand experience, that will be even better.

Nice picture at Harper Quad. What a shame we can’t walk around campus when warm and sunny spring weather finally engulfs the campus.

I think mine is having a bit of a hard time adjusting to being 24/7 with old people; I feel sad for him (and every other student on the planet)

My son just had his first F/L class of the quarter, and he really likes the format that his professor has put together. He thinks it will easily allow them to complete a 10-week curriculum in 9 weeks. My D has a science elective course that is completely self-study - not even a zoom meeting because the lectures are pre-recorded (class size too large maybe). She opted for the course due to the lab which is, of course, cancelled. Hopefully she’ll learn something. Honestly, given that the non-major science courses were starting to trend toward flipped curriculum and the like, I suspect that more will go that route once this is over with. They will already have the recorded lectures!

She also had two seminars back-to-back this afternoon but I haven’t heard any feedback from those yet.

So far so good. It’s weird getting to see how intense a quarter really is. Of course, he doesn’t have track to worry about, so he’s not slammed like normal, but he started doing his pre-reading for a couple classes last week and actually watched some of his lectures yesterday.

Today was his first day in class using Zoom. Seemed pretty seamless so far. Talked quite a lot during the first class because it was a language class, and the 2nd class, physical sciences, is a prerecorded session, and he has the option of choosing whichever hour he wants.

He has 2 more classes to attend tomorrow. We’ll see how that goes.

It’d be interesting to watch some lectures, like @BrianBoiler did.

So far so good for my daughter. I can’t remember which class it was, but in 1 of her classes, the prof let them break out into groups of 5 for a zoom discussion.

Only problem I foresee so far is the fact that my daughter is stuck with her parents, siblings and pets. When you have a brother trying to do his zoom drum lesson, a parent shushing everyone for his zoom conference meetings, and a dog barking nonstop, it makes for a less than ideal study space! It’s not like she can just go the library or a coffee shop to focus.

I asked my daughter what she missed most on this first day of the quarter, and she said she missed walking across the quad between classes :frowning:

After day 1, it’s hard to tell. My D just had one class and the prof mostly talked about the syllabus. They also did breakout sessions, but D said it was mostly just to try it out - no real class content.

Over the break my D applied and was accepted to a newly created research class which took only 5 or 6 students (nowhere to hide!) They will be doing Public Policy research on coronavirus. So she now has 5 classes, plus the internship she’s been doing this academic year is still having her work remotely. I am a little worried about workload. She said if it’s too much, she will drop a class.

Also, interestingly, her UChicago music ensemble (RSO, not a class) director is distributing music to practice and giving listening assignments. They will be having Zoom meetings. D is not sure how she feels about this, lol. I guess she’ll find out more during Wednesday’s meeting.

Day2 - My kid got out of bed at 6:25 for a 6:30 (local time) class!!! ugh!

momo2x2018 - Your kid is efficient!!

deleted

^^ Unfortunately we get to observe all our kids’ habits that they happily acquired while on campus and which probably worked just fine for them

So just an update: my D really loves her science class even w/o lab. That’s a relief! She said her BA seminar started off great as well. Honestly, I’m not sure how it’s going to work for the quality of the thesis when you are potentially compromised in accessing source materials or conducting research. My D won’t be impacted that she can foresee, but she was expressing empathy for those who were planning to travel this spring to do work on their theses.

@kaukauna I’m not sure I’ll survive this Term; I like to do things in an orderly and timely way. On the up side, thus far, he has enjoyed his classes. Yesterday was more about intros., and formatting, today was a straight seven hours of back to back classes (not efficient!).

After class today, he and I took a drive to drop-off food for elderly relatives, literally, dropped at the front doorstep, other than a phone call to say the food was there, zero contact with anyone. It got us out of the house, and I think he’ll need some of that most days… sigh!

Different times, eh?!

My son watched a movie with his local friends by having a Netflix Party. They stay in touch via Zoom and group chat while the movie streams synchronously on each device. I had never heard of a Netflix Party. What a great way to do Movie Night! He also participated in his house meeting on Sunday night. And that got me thinking - I wonder if they will be able to offer a virtual SCAV this year?

@momo2x2018 that was a wonderful thing you and your son did for your relatives. It’s a scary time for the elderly. I’ve been shipping TP and masks to my parents who are quarantined inside their senior community in another state. My dad totally gets it - he’s a retired physician - but being so shut in is making them stir-crazy. While not social butterflies, they do enjoy their independence and coming and going as they please.

My D does the same thing of scheduling her courses back-to-back. She likes having dedicated days to study or work. And for what it’s worth, my hubby thinks your son’s decision to maximize his sleep time was “optimal.”

JB - virtual SCAV could be extremely interesting. It could already make an ingenious event even more thought provoking.

There’s a virtual SCAV for the admitted students this month, which S is excited to participate in.

@JBStillFlying Maybe you could divert some of that TP my way?! Our stores are stripped! You might recall I was one of those secretly scoffing at the hoarders! Look who’s scoffing now; not I ! Your H and my S sound like they could be cut from the same cloth

@momo2x2018 our local Costco is apparently stocked with TP now. I asked my husband whether he picked some up on his last visit there. His response: “Nah.” No doubt to do so wouldn’t have been “optimal.”

I think my son is doing great with the format. His mother, sister, and I not so much. He is so busy studying and doing class that we find ourselves walking on eggshells all day. We all are on different lunch schedules. Different phone schedules. Different video conference schedules. I pretty much end my day at 5pm or 5:30pm. Does he?
No sir, meetings with his SRO, discussion group, I think he even has a late class, then he starts reading and he reads until after I’m in bed. We just had a rain storm followed by sunshine. I walk out of my office singing “The Rainbow Connection” and get shushed by my wife because he’s in a phone interview for a summer internship. I’m pretty sure he won’t get the job on my signing ability alone.

BTW, I too see plenty of TP in the stores in the Philly area. As long as you don’t mind the 80 grit type, that is. Ok, what I mean is it isn’t Quilted Northern, but the store brand.
