<p>I've been writing mine and I'm almost done. However, how many words does it need to be?</p>
<p>For all college apps, is there a "write about whatever you want" essay or am I wasting my time since i don't know the topics.</p>
<p>Depends on which app you’re using. Are you doing the common app, or an essay that is just for one particular school? For the common app, there is no minimum number of words, and there is no maximum. A general guideline is around 500 words, but that’s just a general guideline. If colleges have their own essay you need to do, then it should say on the school’s website or on the actual essay prompt. Some college essays are so open-ended that you can pretty much write about whatever you want, but they should be personal. Most of the time you can make up the prompt, so you have a lot of leeway in what you can write about.</p>
