How many APs to report for transfer admissions?

Hi,

Just a quick question. In high school, I took 10 AP classes. I only got 5’s in 6 of those classes and 4’s in the other 4 (the courses where I received a 4: Macro/Micro, Physics C Mechanics, and Statistics).

I’m applying to transfer to Stanford, Harvard, and MIT. Should I submit only those AP scores where I achieved scores of 5, or should I also submit the 4’s?

My academic record besides APs: 1550 SAT, 3.86/4.00 unweighted high school GPA, and 3.77/4.00 first-year college GPA (T10).

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

I’m not 100% sure that’s true  but, I am sure that submitting 4s on APs will not be why you don’t get an offer.

For Harvard, be aware that their first criterion for transfers is “A clearly defined academic need to transfer”. Coming from UChic that is going to be a challenging case to make.

MIT is looking for students who “bring something unique and special to our community”, and that’s not just marketing talk: they mean it. They really do believe in making a good match.

So, my advice is to save your application fees for these two. I don’t fancy your (or anybody else’s) chances for Stanford, but it is the most aligned with your goals (at least, as they were last year), and I have the feeling that your ‘prestige goggles’ won’t let you focus on being a shining star where you are until you take your shot, even though imo that is the better way to get to where you want to go!

So, I should submit 4’s?

No don’t submit them. But @collegemom3717 is right. I hope you have other schools on your transfer list if you truly want to transfer and are not just looking to trade up.

If any of the following are the case:

  • You needed the AP score for advanced placement or credit at your current college.
  • You will need the AP score for advanced placement or credit at the transfer target college.
  • The transfer target college requires reporting of all AP scores.
  • The transfer target college requires reporting high school record, in which case an AP course without an AP score may be assumed by the college to be a low one.

Then report the AP scores of 4 (as well as those of 5).

Don’t all colleges require the reporting of HS record?

Some selective colleges do not require high school record for junior level transfers (who have sufficient college record so that their high school record is not of importance to those colleges).

I don’t think it will make a difference. Harvard only provides any type of credit for a 5, MIT only 5s, and Stanford only a few 4’s, but I don’t think a score of 4 is going to be big red flag.

At least in the context of their combined 2.9% transfer accept rate and data noted above.
